What is an IBCLC?

An IBCLC is a healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management of chest/breastfeeding. IBCLCs provide expert lactation care to lactating parents and infants who are experiencing difficulties or who simply want to ensure that they are off to a good start with nursing. IBCLCs assess and diagnose feeding problems, provide guidance and support lactating parents, monitor infant growth and development, and recommend appropriate treatment and interventions for a range of feeding related problems.

IBCLC’s have undergone extensive training and have passed a rigorous examination in order to become certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE).

Why Invest in an IBCLC?

IBCLCs are the highest level of lactation professionals. For lactating people, the support of a lactation consultant can be invaluable in reaching their baby-feeding goals. Working with an IBCLC can help the parent/baby dyad:

  • Learn new nursing techniques that enable baby to better transfer milk

  • Increase and maintain milk production

  • Recognize and address common challenges

  • Address weight gain issues with baby

  • Assess, diagnose, send referral and form a treatment plan for oral restrictions including tongue/lip ties

  • Provide referrals for donor milk, tie revisions, craniosacral or occupational therapy

  • Build a plan for milk expression and storage for getting back to work

  • …and so much more!
