When I was 17 years old I decided I wanted to be a caregiver, and specifically, a labor and delivery nurse. In high school I was able to become a certified nursing assistant through an elective course and I started on my path. After graduating high school, I continued my studies at MATC, completing the Practical Nurses curriculum and working as a CNA, working in nursing homes, hospice, home care, and hospitals.
My interest for birth was piqued when I witnessed a birth in the emergency room. It was so exciting to realize that the birth was happening on its own terms (though the other nurses would have loved to get that patient up to labor and delivery first!). The calling toward birthwork was further solidified when I stood at the side of my sister through her labor and birth. After my own uncomplicated pregnancy and birth, I pursued education with ICEA to become a birth doula. Finally, I realized where I really need to be, and became a student midwife. I went on to become a Certified Perinatal Educator and Certified Breastfeeding Educator at Midwest Maternal Child Institute. Through a 5 year apprenticeship and coursework, I have completed the North American Registry of Midwives requirements and have become a Licensed and Certified Professional Midwife.
I am partner to the wonderful Shawn, who has been so awesomely supportive of my birth work. I am proudly mother to two bright eyed, dimple cheeked, goofy children, and stepmom to two lovely young adults.
